At Chevron Australia, we are committed to improving education outcomes in our communities and providing Western Australians with greater access to local job opportunities.

Chevron employees Rhys Lavis and Shaun Luk (pictured above) were recently announced as inaugural recipients of the Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship.

After completing Chevron’s Aboriginal Cadetship Program, Rhys and Shaun transitioned into full time employment at Chevron within the Finance function.

A proud Whadjuk-Noongar man, Rhys believes gaining his Chartered Accountancy qualification will show his younger siblings the opportunities created by further education and hard work.

“I have to try to be a good role model and let them know what's out there, not just in accounting and finance, but try to let them know if they want to go through high school, TAFE or university, they can do whatever they want, and they can smash it,” said Rhys.

Chevron’s Aboriginal Cadetship Program provides professional and financial support to Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander university students, creating a pathway to further education and employment opportunities.  

Throughout their undergraduate degree, Cadets receive financial assistance and on-going professional mentorship, as well as 12 weeks paid vacation employment at Chevron each year of their studies.

Since its commencement in 2013, 15 cadets have completed the program. 

The program is supported by funding from the Commonwealth Government under its Indigenous Advancement Strategy, administered by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
