media statement Chevron-operated Gorgon Project Boosts WA Domestic Gas Supplies
Perth, Western Australia., Dec 9, 2016 – Chevron Australia today announced the commencement of domestic gas supplies to the Western Australian market from the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project on Barrow Island off the northwest coast of Western Australia.
An initial 150 terajoules per day (Tj/d) of gas is being supplied to foundation customer Synergy and an industry customer under long-term contracts.
Chevron Australia managing director Nigel Hearne said the Gorgon Project is a significant new source of cleaner-burning energy for Western Australia and will be a leading domestic gas supplier for decades to come.
“This is a significant development for domestic gas in Western Australia and we are committed to being a safe and reliable supplier of domestic gas to our customers,” said Hearne.
Domestic gas from the Gorgon Project will be transported to the mainland via a 90 kilometre pipeline, connecting into the existing Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline.
The Gorgon Project is the most significant entry into the Western Australian domestic gas market for almost thirty years. At full capacity and subject to market demand, the Gorgon Project could supply up to 300 Tj/d of gas to the Western Australian market, equivalent to generating enough electricity for 2.5 million households.
The Chevron-operated Gorgon Project is a joint venture between the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (47.3 percent), ExxonMobil (25 percent), Shell (25 percent), Osaka Gas (1.25 percent), Tokyo Gas (1 percent) and JERA (formerly Chubu Electric Power- 0.417 percent).
Chevron is one of the world's leading integrated energy companies and through its Australian subsidiaries, has been present in Australia for more than 60 years. With the ingenuity and commitment of thousands of workers, Chevron Australia leads the development of the Gorgon and Wheatstone natural gas projects; manages its equal one-sixth interest in the North West Shelf Venture; operates Australia’s largest onshore oilfield on Barrow Island, is a significant investor in exploration offshore Australia and provides operational support to exploration assets operated by its affiliates in New Zealand. www.chevronaustralia.com
